Jean-Philippe Illanes

Bio / Jean-Philippe Illanes

Born in 1978 in Drancy, France.

Lives and works in Paris.

Jean-Philippe’s work is inspired by handicraft, popular and entertainment culture. An eclectic visual artist, he succeeded in introducing in his creations a playful attitude, which consists in liberating form from content. His creative process is based on the know-how of craftsmen, tinged with poetry and lyricism.

At once a mural painter, a visual artist, a video filmmaker, Jean Philippe uses all kinds of media to express as faithfully as possible his ideas and feelings which all bear witness of his experience.

He uses various materials, such as cuddly toys, wool, wood, inflatable devices, in order to find figurative solutions which are characterized by an ironic taste exalting the sense of playfulness and the exquisiteness of colours in joyful chromatic distorsions. His favourite medium though, remains handicrafts, as they enable him to maintain a tradition, but also to introduce new patterns and worlds.

His black humour has an uncannily childish character and he interprets the cabinets de curiosités tradition with a postmodern feeling linked to the death of his childhood heroes.
